What Actually Matters in a Swimming Sunscreen
Five things, in order of importance:
- Mineral filters (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide). Mineral particles sit on the surface and do not dissolve into water or sweat. Chemical filters are lipophilic - water and sweat mobilize them, which is why they migrate into your eyes and why their protection degrades faster in the pool.
- An 80-minute water resistance rating, not 40. The FDA only allows two claims: 40 minutes or 80 minutes. There is no such thing as waterproof sunscreen. If the label does not say 80 minutes, it is not a swimming sunscreen.
- Broad spectrum SPF 30 or higher. SPF 50 blocks roughly 98% of UVB. Going higher delivers diminishing returns; going lower is a real gap for anyone spending hours outdoors.
- A base that handles chlorine. This is the piece almost nobody addresses. Chlorinated water strips the skin barrier, and most sunscreens do nothing to counteract it.
- Fragrance-free. Fragrance is the leading cause of sunscreen-related irritation, and it stings badly once sweat carries it into your eyes.
Mineral vs Chemical for Swimmers
For general daily wear this is a preference argument. For swimming it is not close.
Chemical filters like avobenzone and octocrylene absorb UV and convert it to heat.
